To most, I’m a Type A account executive managing a team of wildly creative experts in all facets of the advertising world. It’s truly lovely. And chaotic. Mostly chaotic, actually. But that’s okay. I love it because the job requires more than organizing, prioritizing, budgeting and being a ringmaster in this circus of an industry. I am a storyteller.
A storyteller can create something from a simple thought and make it unique and on strategy. Storytelling is about sharing ideas, communicating, getting people involved and listening, engaging and creating something magnificent. It’s truly creativity in a slightly more organized format. It’s also about creation. For example, an advertising campaign comes from an idea and spawns into a multi-pronged, living, breathing thing that (hopefully) increases ROI and creates an experience for the brand and its audience. There is the strategy, the execution, the launch and the post launch/analysis. Also known as a beginning, a middle, and some sort of end. This story can be big and bold or small but mighty. Either way, it’s a creative being.
Being an account executive is like any other passionate walk of life. It’s about doing everything in your power to leave the place you are visiting in better shape than when you arrived. That’s how the story goes.
